Old Spice

December 23, 2021

Mr. Karen and I reached a milestone in our relationship this week: we used the last of the container of pumpkin pie spice that we’ve had in our cupboard approximately forever. I don’t remember exactly when we bought it, but based on the amount of brown used in the design on the tin, I’m guessing late 1980s or early 1990s. We definitely moved it from Michigan to Idaho in the mid-2010s, no question about that. It was used in a few pies, yes, but mostly in egg nog.

We are planning on making a pumpkin pie for Christmas, our first with Penzey’s Pie Spice (not their pumpkin pie spice, which I do not have).

I have a jar of that stuff (different brand) that has been in my cupboard for 10+ years, and I still remember how betrayed I felt when I got home and read the label and realized it was just an expensive mixture of spices I already owned.

Hm. Might be time to clean out the spice cupboard…
