Monday, June 29: More driving, out of Montana and through Wyoming to South Dakota. Stopped at the rest area near Sheridan, which is up on a hill with a view.
Tuesday, June 30: Yep, more driving, through the rest of South Dakota and into Minnesota. Made a stop at the Corn Palace, which was rather far along in the process of being updated to this year’s theme, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA.
Wednesday, July 1: Still driving, this day through the rest of Minnesota, then Wisconsin, and into northern Illinois. At a gas stop, we fueled up, moved the car into a parking spot, went in to use the restroom, as per usual; when we came out, the pumps were closed, with caution tape blocked them off. No idea what happened.
Thursday, July 2: Not much driving, just from northern Illinois to the Chicago suburbs, where we hung out with a friend from high school before checking into our hotel for the family reunion weekend. It was from the era where big atriums were the rage; we were on the 9th floor.
Friday, July 3: Went to see a Cubs game with some of the family in town for the reunion. Some of the family went via public transport, for various reasons, Mr. Karen and I went via car with his sister and her husband and one of the grandparents. I booked a parking spot via an app that let me put in the vehicle we had so we could be sure we’d fit, which technically we did, but Mr. Karen had to crawl out the back hatch to exit the car since the space was so narrow. The rainstorm had mostly passed by the time we arrived, but the game was on a short delay to get the field in shape. It was good to be back at Wrigley Field, though our seats were in the sun, which came out with force after the rain delay, and the Cubs lost badly, scoring only one run to the opponents 17.
Saturday, July 4: The main event: the family reunion, which means food and games and conversation. The weather wasn’t entirely cooperative, with rain that kept us inside much of the time and mostly washed out the fireworks (we skipped it and went back to the hotel, where we saw some bursts from our window).
Sunday, July 5: Had brunch with a lot of the family before hitting the road again. Stopped at one of the last classic oasis on the Illinois Tollway for gas and also nostaligia’s sake.
