Not As Expected
December 20, 2019
I know I write about the weather a lot. It’s a major factor in how I spend my days in winter, and I’m gonna write about it again today, because Mother Nature done me wrong, raining all over the snow we got yesterday and last night. I know it’s not her fault; I know she’s only reacting to all the damage humans have done to her, no longer able to regulate the way she once did. When we went to bed last night, the forecast was for 10 to 14 inches of snow by morning, then another 7 to 11 today. Excellent! That would be good skiing.
When I woke up in the middle of the night to pee and found the power was out, I took that as good sign, that there’d been enough snow to disrupt things but leaving enough time for crews to fix whatever it was before the lifts needed to start spinning. When it was time to get up to start the day, I found this:
Raindrops on the window, meaning all that snow from earlier was now heavy and wet. As an awful bonus, it was also windy, which meant the higher elevation lifts couldn’t be run safely, meaning no access to elevations where it might be snowing instead of raining.
I had breakfast, saw no improvement in conditions, and decided to stay in and take care of stuff around the house. After all, one of the benefits to living her and having a season pass is that I don’t need to ski every possible moment I can because soon I’ll be back at a desk for weeks on end. Mr. Karen elected to go out and ski; he came home several hours later soaked nearly to the skin despite all the engineered fabrics we wear.
There’s more snow in the forecast, but the temperatures look worryingly high; if they slip just a bit warmer, it’ll be more rain and I’ll be making more sad faces.
