A Week in Photos: 2026, Part 42

November 5, 2026

Monday, October 12: Encountered some patches of frost on my morning walk.

Grass and clover dusted with frost viewed up close.

Tuesday, October 13: Walked up into the forest behind the house. Used the literal kitchen sink as my turnaround point. No idea how it got there. Don’t even know if it was ever in the house … doesn’t seem like the right style for that. There aren’t any similar landmarks along the trail that I’ve come across so far, but I haven’t been to the top of the hill yet.

Wednesday, October 14: Continuing to see new plants in my new environment. Wasn’t sure what these small dark spiky things were when I spotted them. Poked around online later and learned they’re likely seed pods of some type of desmanthus, commonly known as bundleflower.

Thursday, October 15: Mr. Karen and I finished packing up and hit the road for a trip to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. I have a new backpack that shows off my little emotional support stuffies, and that makes me happy. First stop was a hotel in an Oregon coast beach town. We arrived after dark and our hotel wasn’t right on the beach so really could have been anywhere.

Black backpack with two clear pockets on the front, both containing small stuffed creatures. Top pocket has a bright purple triceratops and a sock monkey in classic mottled brown. Bottom pocket has a crocheted octopus and a crocheted potato holding a sign of support.

Friday, October 16: Woke up early so took stroll to the ocean before Mr. Karen woke up, then we took one together after breakfast. Drove south along the water then dipped inland a bit to visit the cheese factory in Tillamook, where we had a delicious lunch (as well as partaking of some cheese samples and buying a few things in the shop). Drove south some more after that, stopping to look at the ocean every now and then. Ended our day in Crescent City, California.

Saturday, October 17: Woke up to to a misty morning. That burned off while we were getting ready to go see the redwoods. I’d never been before, and the scale is truly impressive in person. We did a few hikes and stopped for lunch at an old school-feeling tourist attraction that had giant statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. Made our way down to Fortuna, California to spend the night.

Trail bordered by large redwood trees. A man in a rainbow tie dye hoodies is walking along the trail away from the camera.

Sunday, October 18: Took a walk along the Eel River after breakfast then drove through wine country to our stop for the night in Santa Rosa, where we had time to relax over a sushi dinner then stop at another restaurant after for pie.
