A Week in Photos: 2026, Part 22

June 15, 2026

Monday, May 25: Last day of the conference. This year my room had a view of the overflow hotel and some retaining ponds.

View from a 6th floor window of a retaining pond, a four-lane road with center turn lane, and a hotel across the street surrounded by a parking lot.

Tuesday, May 26: I didn’t plan for my fake nails to match so well with my friend Nikki’s new car (which they had wrapped) but they sure did.

My hand, with pink to blue duochrome nails, held next to a car that is also a pink duochrome.

Wednesday, May 27: A couple of friend from Spokane happened to be in Illinois at the same time I was at my conference. She decided to stay on to get more time with family, but he had to stick to the original plan to drive back after Memorial Day. He swung by and picked me up and we headed west. I got to show them (he had their big dog with him) a couple of my favorite places along the route (a cheese shop and a short hike to a view at one of the rest areas). We also got to stop and have dinner with a couple of his friends who’d also been at the conference I was at.

Large fiberglass white and black cow statue viewed from the back.

Thursday, May 28: Another day on the road, much of it in North Dakota, where we stopped at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where Timber (the dog) was not too keen on how windy it was but did seem to like walking on the forbidden side of the fence.

Deep yellow labrador retriever dog with grey around his muzzle, looking to the left of the frame.

Friday, May 29: While we were loading up to continue our road trip, a train was idling next to the parking lot. Of course I though of my dad, the train buff. It’s been nearly 26 years now since I’ve been able to call and tell him about the locomotives I’ve seen.

Two orange, yellow, and black BNSF diesel engines idling on a track next to a parking lot.

Saturday, May 30: Back in Spokane, stopped in a big box grocery store to restock toiletries I’d run out of. Saw my favorite fake nails on sale and got excited, but then got frustrated because it was some sort of digital coupon, and I don’t want to figure out yet another app situation.

Store display of fake nails with a sale sticker.

Sunday, May 31: Got dropped off at a hotel near the storage studio a few hours before Mr. Karen arrived from western Washington. Spent some of that time trying to figure out what kind of animal was in the field I could see from the hotel room window. I eventually decided it was a coyote even though I couldn’t see it super well. I walked outside to see if I could see it better, which I could not (it might have slunk out of the field it was in by then), but I did see some pretty clouds above the mountains I used to call home.

Landscape with pine trees and grass in the foreground and tree covered hills/mountains in the background with pink and blue clouds in the sky.
