A Week in Photos: 2026, Part 21

June 8, 2026

Monday, May 18: Among the critters on the property are snakes. This little one was next to the deck in back of the house.

Bed of rounded rocks with pine boughs overhanging it and a dark grey snake slithering on the rocks.

Tuesday, May 19: Finished packing for a trip which involves flying, a conference, a road trip, and a couple days in Idaho before heading home. I’ve taken to taping down the zipper pulls on my checked bag after having had them ripped off in the baggage handling process before. I was pleased with how this tape coordinated with my bag and lock. (And yes, the tape can come loose and get caught in the machinery, too, but since I’ve started this pracctice, I haven’t lost another zipper pull in transit.)

Top of a purple suitcase with a turquoise lock joining the zipper. Tape in a mermaid scales design of pink, purple, turquoise, and green secures the zipper pulls to the bag.

Wednesday, May 20: When I bought my plane ticket for this trip, I decided to get a morning flight so I could have more options to get to my destination in time for the conference in case something went wrong with my original plans as seems to be happening more and more with flights. That meant I had to catch the bus to the airport before 6 a.m., not a time I am naturally inclined to be awake at. That also meant I saw the sunrise from the house for the first time. My flight did end up being delayed over an hour, which gave me time to wander the airport in Seattle a bit. For the first time, I noticed that not all the metal figures embedded in the floor are fish … some of them are airplanes. What a fun surprise after so many times going through that terminal.

Light grey with dark accents terrazzo floor with three metal jet planes embedded in it, flying from left to right.

Thursday, May 21: I couldn’t check in to the conference hotel until late afternoon, so I spent the late morning/early afternoon poking around suburban Chicago. Attempting to look up directions to a store I’d been to before, I came across one I’d never heard of that sounded interesting and that’s how I ended up at a clearance store in the basement of a mostly empty mall. There were definitely bargains to be had if one looked carefully and checked everything over for wear/riips/stains/etc. as the stock seemed to include some stuff that had been worn and returned. I found a pair of jeans that actually fit both my waist and hips at the same time, which is a rare treat. If they’d had more than one pair of them, I might have bought multiples just to have on hand when the first pair wore out. I also looked at the shoes and tried on some very impractical pairs

Aisle at a store with shoes somewhat messily arranged on tall metal shelves.

Friday, May 22: Got a mini Highland cow figure when I checked in for the conference because I knew the woman who was checking ID s and she was giving them away.

Small brown highland cow figure next to a green metal stylus on a shiny black desk.

Saturday, May 23: Went out to a German restaurant for dinner. These figures were painted on the wall of the entryway.

Male monk and female in a dirndl painted on the wall between brown wood slats.

Sunday, May 24: Conveyor belt sushi for dinner on this night. There was a special tamago offering which was right up my alley. Wish it were on the menu all the time.

Two square pieces of egg sushi wrapped in seaweed and topped with mayonaisse.
