Today, for the second day in a row, Mr. K and I spent most of the day with his mom at her new home in the senior living community. I took a break after lunch to walk over to the mall nearby and try to get her some particular items she wanted from one of the department stores. On the way there, I passed a big box grocery store, a thrift store, an Indian restaurant, two or three discount stores, a European grocery store, a Rite Aid, and a few other stores and restaurants. On the way back, there was a Barnes & Noble and a Walgreens among other businesses. The whole trip was maybe two miles. Living where I do now, walking to anywhere but the ski resort is pretty much out of the question, so I was reveling in the convenience and thinking how nice it would be for Mr. K and I to live somewhere similar when we move on to the next phase of our retirement after we stop skiing (fingers crossed that is still at least a couple decades away), but it occurred to me if we can easily walk a mile to the store, we’ll probably be able to ski and live independently and won’t need to be in a senior living community. I guess it would still be convenient to be close to so many things when we do need extra assistance, as then we won’t have to spend so long on the little shuttle bus taking us on field trips to the drug store and such. I hope we live long enough to and have enough money left at that point to get a chance to find out.
