Signs and Portents

January 4, 2005

In the dream I was dreaming just before I woke up (to the light of the alarm clock, now featuring no beeping thanks to Mr. Karen, who figured out that pressing three of the buttons at the same time and holding them for 10 seconds would turn off the noise feature), a squirrel turned into a zebra in our front yard after I led him there from under the headboard of my bed. A few days ago, I dreamt that our friend Eli turned into a golden retriever. I wonder if my brain is serving up these images of transformation for a particular reason. Maybe I’m due for a big change in my life. Maybe I should make some New Year’s resolutions like so many other people are doing right now even though I’ve established my own fiscal goal year of April 1 to March 31. Or maybe I just watched too much Animal Planet over the holidays.

It’s not just my dreams that are showing signs that changes might be in order. On the way to work yesterday, I saw a car up against the concrete median of one of the freeways. That’s not unusual in itself, but this car was facing the wrong way, against traffic. I don’t know how it got there–it didn’t look smashed, and there was no traffic backup in the area. Then driving home, I saw a pickup truck on the shoulder of a different freeway, also facing the wrong way and seemingly undamaged. I wonder if these vehicles the universe’s way of telling me I’m heading in the wrong direction in my life. Or maybe I’m just assigning meaning to random events.

I do want to get back on track with my goals, though. Other than the quilting one, which I feel kind of strange having a goal for in the first place because it’s something I enjoy doing, not just having done, I’m not exactly on track. As far as eating and exercise goes, I’m pretty much off in the weeds and can’t even see the track from here. That will change. I know how to do that. I just need to muster up the vim.
