The Secret to My Success

December 17, 2008

I need to do more research to confirm it, but I have a new theory that Clif bars in the Cool Mint Chocolate flavor are the key to happiness and productivity. I had one for pre-dinner last night (the meal that comes between work and driving home when I haven’t managed to get out of the office at a reasonable hour) and boy howdy that thing must have been sprinkled with time-release methamphetamine because I felt great after eating it and still feel good this morning. This despite having to drive home in the middle of a snow storm which meant an hour and a half on the road, white knuckling the steering wheel any time I had to change lanes, yet I came home singing instead of drained and cranky. (What I was singing when I came into the kitchen happened to be the tune from Dig Dug, which I had no explanation for when Mr. Karen asked where I’d gotten that; I haven’t played the game in years, and I sure don’t have that soundtrack on my iPod.) In the tiny slice of time between when I got home and when I went to bed, I ate dinner, straightened up several rooms so our cleaning lady could clean, checked my e-mail, and packed my gym bag and laid out clothes to shovel in because of course I could shovel the driveway and sidewalk and still get to the gym before work the next morning. And amazingly, I did. Granted, I left part of the driveway for Mr. Karen to shovel and only did one set on each machine at the gym while also skipping most of the core work and stretching I usually add on after the machines, but still that’s a lot do before work especially since the roads were still slippery enough that there were four accidents on the traffic report by 6:30 a.m. I expect I will be running out of steam any minute now and am sad to say I have no more of the magic bars. Must stop at the store soon.

I could use a few of those, like maybe a thousand.

I love that one, too, but must admit that it has never had quite that same effect on me.
