I Am Not a Girlie Girl

December 18, 2008

I don’t have many gifts to buy for Christmas but that doesn’t stop me from browsing. I was happy to see that Yahoo’s gift guide for this year focuses more on the type of gift rather than the type of person one might be buying for as they did in 2007. Last year, the “Gifts for Her” main categories consisted primarily of a list of stereotypes: Girlie Girl, Executive Woman, The Fashionista, Super Mom, Female Techie, Accessories Addict, Martha Stewart Devotee. Yikes. What if the female in question didn’t fit one of those roles? No gift for her, I guess. At least had “Executive Woman” and “Female Techie” on there to acknowledge people like me (yes, I do like my shoes, but I wouldn’t say I qualify as an addict). Last year, only the “Gifts for Him” guide had sports stuff on it (in the Sports Junkie category—guys could also be Metro Man, Gadget Guru, Well-traveled Professional, Devoted Dad, Gourmet Connoisseur, or Mr. Fix-it), but this year there’s a “Sports & Fitness Gifts for Her” list. That’s progress. I’d be even more impressed if the women’s fitness list had any weights on it; the men’s list has two different sets. Ah well, there’s always next year.
