A Week in Photos: 2026, Part 36
September 10, 2026
Monday, August 31: Started my drive home with a flat tire only a few minutes from my friend’s house where I’d spent the weekend. Apparently there was a razor blade (?!) in the middle of the road that I ran over when I slid over a bit to see if it was safe to pass. Having the car loaded with boxes from the storage unit made getting the spare on less convenient but my friend was able to come help and loaded the tire into their vehicle for the drive to the nearby tire shop (I probably could have gotten in my car somehow but it would have been a pain) before they went back to their work day (thank goodness they were working from home since their office office is too far for them to have been able to come help). As it turned out, the tire could not be fixed to make it safe for the 400 mile drive home, so the shop put the spare back on and kept the ruined tire for disposal. They couldn’t fit the wheel into my car with the boxes, but I managed to. I then drove home via the slow route (to baby the limited use spare), which took me on some roads I’d never been on. I made it home safe, just many hours later than I’d planned when I’d set out that morning.
Tuesday, September 1: Today’s house project: a guy came to “shock” the well (basically injecting chlorine into it for disinfection purposes, which we needed because while the new septic system did clear up the e coli in the water issue, there was still some other bacteria that showed up in the post-septic install test). Our part of that was opening the taps one by one long enough to smell the chlorine, which I though would be easy but my nose soon got used to the smell, so I carried around a little container of coffee to sniff as a reset. That done, we had to not use any water for at least 12 hours so the chlorine could soak in the pipes. Since we haven’t been drinking the water, we were pretty well setup for that challenge.
Wednesday, September 2: Of course there’s plenty of work to do to get settled in the house, boxes to unpack, furniture to arrange, decorating to decide on, but I think it’s important to take time to relax and watch baseball too.
Thursday, September 3: Out running errands and saw lots of Halloween merchandise. These skeletons dressed as employees particularly amused me.
Friday, September 4: It’s been years since I did any quilting (last finished a quilt in 2015 and haven’t really done anything since besides going to a quilt show with friends in 2019). My fabric and other quilting stuff is still in storage from the move to Idaho. But I’m feeling stirrings of desire to get back to it. Maybe this phase of retirement is when I’m going to achieve the vision of quilting that I had for it when I was still working. The algorithm saw fit to show me something called temperature quilts, where folks establish a range of colors that map to high and low temperatures in a location then make a block for each day’s weather for a whole year. I could do that for 2027, our first full year in what may be our home for the rest of our lives. I’m thinking on it.
Saturday, September 5: One project I have completed is gathering all my fake nails in one cabinet so I can see and use what I have. This made it easy for me to find the nails I can only wear when my natural nails are very short, which they are now because I decided it was time to clip and file them down after tearing one nearly down to the quick. I do want to get some better containers to group different styles together but that’s not a huge hurdle.
Sunday, September 6: These yellow apples seem to be ripe now, so I picked some.
