Birdseed Quilt

May 5, 2002

It’s Cinco de Mayo, and I’m celebrating because I finished a project, a baby quilt with a birds and nature theme. Having just been born, the baby hasn’t developed any interests of her own yet to base a quilt on, but her parents are birders. They’ve taken vacations to see birds in far-flung locations and have many feeders in their yard so they can watch feathered friends closer to home, so when I saw a fabric with a birdseed print, I knew I’d found my focus fabric. I was fortunate that it fit into the neutral color scheme I’d planned. I wanted it to be neutral to coordinate with the quilt I’d made for the baby’s sister a couple years ago (it’s the “baby quilt with cranes” in my quilt gallery); that one was neutral to match the parents’ taste and décor.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. My favorite part is all the different creatures there are for the baby to find when she studies it: ducks, sparrows, cardinals, owls, woodpeckers, dragonflies, dogs, roosters, a moose, some deer, a raccoon, and lots of others, along with many squirrels, since we have a lot of those around here. There are also bird eggs and feathers and nests to see. I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to work in the web/techie fabric I wanted to sneak in the design, since the father and I work together doing web/techie things, but it just didn’t fit with the rest of the fabrics. Maybe I’ll make a wall quilt for my office with that at some point after I finish the other six quilts on the list for this year.
