Monday, March 16: Kicking off my birthday week with a honey lavender mimosa at a brunch place that was a favorite before we moved here and now is a mere 15 minute drive from the house. Then since we’re still working on the whole moving thing, we had to go get our car registration switched to Washington and apply for new license plates. We wanted some of the special designs, which the clerk didn’t ask about and we didn’t think to mention until it seemed like she was wrapping things up. Turns out, she had to start the process all over because apparently that’s how the software works. Seems ridiculous but we really wanted those plates so we waited. We’ll wait more for the plates to be mailed but eventually they’ll come and that’ll be one more thing checked off the list.
Tuesday, March 17: Our moving pod arrived! It was too wet to start unloading it, but at least it’s here and ready to go when it it dries up a bit.
Wednesday, March 18: In addition to the flowering trees with white blossoms, we’ve got rhododendron bushes with pink blossoms down next to the pasture. Today’s milestone was taking our trash and recycling toters down to the main cross street for our first pickup. To do this, we got a cargo tray that hooks into the hitch receptacle on our cars (it’s about a 15 minute walk one way, more if we had to drag the toters).
Thursday, March 19: I was not impressed with our first trash and recycling pickup. No idea if this is typical, but found both toters in the ditch rather than set back down on the pavement, plus about a third of our recycling was just spilled into the ditch water. No idea if this is typical; guess we’ll find out in two weeks when our next pickup comes.
Friday, March 20: Got a break in the weather and finished emptying out the moving pod (we’d started a couple days before but stopped when the rain came back). For the first time in the history of this process, I was able to schedule the pickup online without having to call or text the company. Our living room is very much a work in progress, what with the king sized mattress sitting on the floor waiting for the frame to be assembled in the bedroom, but the view is still wonderful.
Saturday, March 21: Went for a walk with Mr. Karen on the trails above the house, taking turns cutting blackberry vines and other branches as we went. Found a discarded kitchen sink in the woods but nothing else unusual.
Sunday, March 22: Trips to the home improvement store are likely to be a regular feature of our lives for a while. This trip we looked at shelving but didn’t find anything quite right for the spaces we wanted to start with. We did find a dehumidifier for the basement and our path through the aisles took us past this display of spray foam varieties.
