Happy Color Update: Three Weeks into April
April 23, 2025
Time again for another Happy Color update, almost a month since the last time. I thought about waiting until my In Progress queue was more organized but decided that might mean no update for this month at all, so here we are.
I reached a milestone recently: Happy Color surpassed Photos as the app using the most storage on my phone. I poked around the ‘net to see if there was a way to reduce that but there don’t seem to be any real options.
Since the last update, I started a bunch of pictures from the bonuses category. Some got paired with each other, but some got non-bonus partners. I wish there was a way to see which ones came from the Bonus tab, as I sometimes find better partners for images but don’t want to drop any of the bonuses since I may never get back to them.
The app finally added new awards for coloring x number of pictures in a category, etc. I had long since earned most of the previous top levels; I think I only lacked two or three of the categories. When I updated the app, it showed I’d already earned 18 of the new ones—though should have been more, as ones like bonus and daily don’t seem to have updated properly, and I know I color a lot of those. It’s pretty clear which categories I’m less engaged with: Art, Superheroes (I don’t know that this is even a thing anymore, since Marvel was taken away), Collections (though I’m close on this one), Vehicles, Patterns (probably because I usually do these only as separators and those take a while to cycle through), Mosaic, Marine, Sport, Butterflies, Tattoo, Disney, Horoscopes, Classy, Blend, Stories, Popular, Like (those last two weren’t a thing under the old system, and maybe Blend wasn’t either).
My most recent finishes are for Earth Day, but I’m going to highlight some less recent ones as they make me smile with all their bright colors. These are ones I pulled for my spring group, and you can tell by the style that I had to reach deep into the past to find these. Most of the newer pictures are more complex than these, getting away from the “coloring book” aesthetic the app started with.
Groups I’ve finished since the previous update:
Earth Day (2; one bonus, one from holiday tab)
Easter (38; most from holiday)
Spring animals (104; cows with flowers, sheep, baby farm birds, rabbits)
Naughty dogs (6; group built around a bonus image)
Patterns (2; one was from Popular category to work on that new award, so yes their ploy is working)
Dailies from early April that partnered up with each other (4)
Simple florals with two mirrored stems that I happened to notice while looking for other things in Bonus, Flower, and Pattern tabs (4)
Passover (2)
Songkran Festival (2)
Spring: playing in puddles, rain and umbrellas, birdhouses and nests, flowers, fashion, laying in the grass, flying kites (68)
Pet day (4)
Footwear and flowers; these had been in the spring group but coloring them in I discovered two were actually fall but I didn’t want to break up the set (14)
Unknown holiday relating to healthy living/self-care (2)
Pictures of the week and month for March (12)
Dailies and mysteries for last part of March (22)
April welcome pic and gnome (2)
Autism Day (2)
April Fools Day (2)
European buildings (2)
Vikings (6)
World Theatre Day (6)
Dailies and mysteries from mid-March that weren’t done with the relevant holidays (12)
Currently In Progress:
1.) Dailies and mysteries from April, some which still need to be paired up, possibly with the potential mates also in this group (many of which will probably not make the cut this time), plus a few more of the simple florals with mirrored stems that I missed seeing when I did the group I finished before, plus a couple of images that belong in the future holiday/seasons group, plus a potentially better mate for an image in a different group. (Separators: waves patterns, two flowing and two mosaic) [76 images total, including separators]
2.) Dailies and mysteries from April that aren’t paired up but aren’t in the first group because I got distracted and then had to go to bed before getting everything sorted, plus two images that may find a home in different group. (Separators: two more waves patterns) [11 and yes the odd number does bother me in this context]
3.) Bonuses and friends: rams, deer, horses, tortoises, fish and bubbles, baby water birds, parrots, cats (some in human clothes or eating human food, some hairless, some with balls of yarn), animals/people relaxing on stacks of cushions, women standing in front of jungle foilage, men on flower backgrounds with message ribbons, lizards (land and aquatic), mushrooms, garden courtyards, butterflies on flowers, lots of flowers without butterflies, berries, food on tables, cakes and desserts. (Separators: patterns with lots of dots, overlapping floral-esque patterns) [126]
4.) Pictures of the week for first half of April (third week is available but I haven’t started it). (Separators: two tile patterns, two geometric spirals, two op art grids, monster triangle pic and simpler horizontal diamonds pattern still paired with each other for lack of better options) [12]
5.) Women with umbrellas that upon coloring gave more of an autumn feel than the spring group they’d been pulled for. These will get incorporated into holiday/seasonal group when I get things reorganized. (Separators: twelve patterns of various types) [20]
6.) Squirrels. (Separators: two geometric patterns with a Vaughan vertical diamond feel) [66]
7.) Holiday/seasonal: Pet Day, Internet Day, Dream Day, Children’s Day, Autumn, Valentine’s Day, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Summer, Halloween, Women in Science Day, India Independence Day, Diwali, World Kindness Day, Rubber Duck Day, Teachers’ Day, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Venice Carnival, Day of the Dead, Relax Day, Equinox, Canada Day, World Water Day. (Separators: all the rest of them) [140]
