2019: Better, Stronger, More Organized

January 31, 2019

In what appears to be a tradition, as this is the second year in a row I’ve done, I am now ready to write down my New Year’s resolutions on the last day of the first month of the new year. I’ve had some things in mind, and have been doing some of them, but now’s the time to commit them to pixels and publish. This list will look quite familiar to anyone who was around for last year’s (mostly unaccomplished) goals.

1. Photographing
I signed up for the 2019 iteration of my daily photo group on Flickr, despite not being sure I’m going to stay at Flickr all year. I also joined a Facebook group which has some of the same people in it as well as some people who were in prior iterations of the My Daily Photo Diary group on Flickr but who are no longer posting photos there. So far, I’ve taken at least one photo every day. I’m a few days behind right now in posting them to Flickr and Facebook with a sentence or two of text. I’m good with that, and I’d like to continue for the rest of the year.

2. Reading
I set a goal in Goodreads of reading my age (57). In January, I finished six books. So far, so good, although I haven’t put any of them into Goodreads yet, which I need to do.

3. Writing: Nail Blog
I did nine posts in my my nail blog, Frazzle and Aniploish, in January, which was more than my average in 2018, so that’s good. I’d like to at least match that in February.

4. Writing: Online Journal
Holidailies shows I can write here more often if I decide to. Obviously in January, I didn’t decide to. I’m going to aim for four posts in February and go from there.

5. Resisting
I participated in the local Women’s March this month, and in February will go to my first Town Hall with one of my state reps and my state senator. Also this month, I spent probably too much time in the comments of Gillette’s Facebook posts, replying to dudes who can’t tell the difference between masculinity and toxic masculinity. I want to find more effective ways to use my privilege for good.

6. Organizing
I’m not sure what exactly I got done in this area in January. I think maybe I unpacked a box or two from the storage unit. I need to put some structure around this because I have way too much stuff still. Need to get that energy moving.

7. Cooking
I’m in a pretty good groove with the Instant Pot, and added quiche to the dishes in my regular rotation between making things in the IP. This year, I’d like to make my own stock and keep trying new recipes. I’d also like to get my favorites onto cards and into a file box instead of having them all written on random pieces of paper gathered with a binder clip.

8. Exercising
Skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking work my lower body and lungs, but I need to get some upper body work in, too. Haven’t so far. Have done some stretching fairly regularly, mostly because at my age I feel it when I don’t.

9. Losing weight
Really got to work on this this year. I know what do to, I just don’t like doing it.

10. Creating
This is a new one, not a carry over. I want to get back to knitting and quilting and tactile crafts. To that end, in February I plan to start exercising those pathways by working through a knot tying kit I bought Mr. Karen way back in the day. One card, one knot each day.

I guess there are some aspects of depth here, doing more of things I’ve done before. Not sure it qualifies as a depth year, but that’s fine.
