In Flight

January 17, 2006

Last night I got back from a trip to Utah, where Mr. Karen and I spent some time at Alta, which somehow I’d managed to not visit since 2003 even though it’s quite possibly the best place to ski in the whole United States. I don’t have time right now to do a full trip report, what with having to catch up with the 594 e-mails I got at work during the three business days I was gone (no, we don’t have MLK Day off) and such. I do have time to tell you that the Embraer 170 is my new favorite regional jet. The seat map at the Delta website says it has the same seat pitch, 31 inches, as the CRJ Northwest uses on similar routes, but it sure felt roomier. Mr. Karen proposed that slimmer seat cushions are the reason, speculating that new padding technology provides similar support in less space. I think the rounded, light colored seat backs contribute; rather than being faced with a dark slab, there’s open space to contemplate. Whatever it was, I liked it. I think my carryon bag did, too, as there was enough space under the seat in front of me for it to fit without being squished one little bit.

Oh, and remember the triplets? They have a sibling, Redundo, who floods things.
