Thanksgiving Travel

November 30, 2009

Pilgrim MickeyMr. Karen and I spent the long holiday weekend in Illinois, hanging out with our families and trying not to eat ourselves into a stupor despite all the opportunities to do just that. Thursday we had a traditional Thanksgiving meal with Mr. Karen’s side of the family (though after 30 years together, 23 of those as husband and wife, the distinction between in-laws and blood relatives is getting rather blurry), complete with some of the youngest cousins to entertain us. On Friday, Fay and her husband arrived and we had a big dinner out with them. Saturday, Mr. K and I took our leave of the D’s and went to see my side of the family for, yes, another big meal. I was especially happy that my sister-in-law was feeling well enough to come out with us; she’s battling ovarian cancer and is going through chemo right now. When we weren’t eating (or driving—though that part was much better than some years, as we had no snow to contend with and only ran into bad traffic on one fairly short stretch through Chicago) we helped out with various tasks around the houses and I took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather on Friday to sneak off to two cemeteries I hadn’t been to before (they were so interesting that I used up my camera battery, so I’ll have to go back sometime).

Pictures from the trip are here.
