I May Have a Problem Here

April 6, 2007

I’ve been reading more knitblogs lately (in part because I’m curious to see how other people’s accounts of the Yarn Harlot’s Ann Arbor appearance compare to mine–estimates of how late she was and how long she spoke vary rather more than I expected), and I’ve noticed many people are participating in Knit From Your Stash or have joined the Stashalong or have otherwise put themselves on a yarn diet. Good for them, I thought. I didn’t feel any pull to join them. I’ve only been knitting a year and half, so I don’t have that much stash. (Yarn stash, that is. My fabric stash is a sight to behold, and I’m okay with that. It’s the result of almost twenty years of collecting, after all.)

Well, I may have been wrong about that. I have today off and decided to pull out my yarn to see what I have on hand that I can use for the Charmed Knits Knit-along I joined. One completely covered dining room table later, I am ready to admit I may have a stash issue.

I made a spreadsheet for my stash (of course I did, it’s no fluke that I decided to major in accounting in college) and find I have 10222 grams of yarn. Sure, there are other people who have more, but ten thousand grams seems like rather a lot. I’m not quite to the point where I think signing up for a formal de-stashing program is necessary, but I am going to keep an eye on it.
