I’m still a virgin. Sure, I’ve seen people doing it in documentaries, and heard people talking about it, but I’ve never participated. The crowd I hung out with at the age most people lose it wasn’t into that kind of thing, and it didn’t seem like something I’d want to venture out and try to do with strangers, even if I weren’t a shy person. Now that I’m a bit braver about trying new things, it doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as popular as it once was. The last place I heard about people doing it regularly was Madison, Wisconsin, and I only heard about that because they were going to stop soon.
Mr. Karen actually lost his virginity without me, before we were married. He either can’t remember the experience very well or just isn’t sharing many specifics with me. I do know that it was with a mixed-gender group of his friends, and there was some dancing involved. He cannot explain why I was not invited to join them. Sure, we lived an hour and a half drive apart at the time, but we saw each other most weekends, and I could have made a special trip for something like that.
Maybe he didn’t invite me because it really doesn’t seem like the kind of thing I’d like. I believe it’s rude to talk during a movie, much less put a newspaper over one’s head or throw food or get up and dance. But perhaps it’s something I should try at least once, just to say I’ve done it, and I might even enjoy it, like downhill skiing. Now that we’re in the age of the Internet, I can research it online and not have to be embarrassed by asking a librarian for the appropriate reference materials.
